International

This year, the ED SIS will examine requests for international mobility on an as-needed basis, within the limits of its specific budget.
The call for applications aims to support PhD students' mobility during their thesis.
The objectives of these mobility grants are in particular to encourage outgoing mobility (Applications for mobility to the co-supervising institution will not be given priority), to strengthen the training of international excellence for doctoral students and to develop their network.
If your mobility lasts at least three months, you may be able to apply for the European Label from your graduating institution when you submit your thesis defense application (see conditions below).

Application file and FAQ

  • Cotutelle
Or joint supervision is a system that allows doctoral students to complete their doctorate under the supervision of two people while being enrolled at both a French institution and a foreign institution. The period spent at either institution cannot be less than one-third of the total duration of the doctorate. In France, where doctoral programs last 36 months, students must spend at least 12 months at the co-supervision institution. Students are enrolled and receive their degrees from both institutions.
The co-supervision agreement must include each party's expectations regarding training and the procedures for forming the thesis defense committee
  • Co-direction
Co-supervision does not entail any obligation regarding the duration of a stay. Registration and graduation take place at a single institution, even if, in this case too, two people share the supervision.
The co-supervision agreement must include the expectations of each party regarding the training and the procedures for setting up the thesis defense committee.
  • European label
Your degree-awarding institution may issue the “European label.”

This label, or “European Doctorate,” consists of a traditional doctoral degree to which is added a “European label” certificate issued by the degree-awarding institution and signed by its director.

This label does not appear on the doctoral degree, but it is a strong asset for promoting doctoral training internationally.

To be eligible for the “European label,” four conditions must be met at the time of the thesis defense:

1. The doctoral degree must have been prepared for at least one quarter in a European country other than the country where the thesis is defended.
2. Authorization to defend the thesis is granted on the basis of pre-defense reports written by at least two professors belonging to higher education institutions in two different European countries other than the one where the thesis will be defended.
3. At least one member of the jury must belong to a higher education institution in a European country other than the one in which the doctoral thesis is defended;
4. Part of the defense must be conducted in a European national language other than the national language(s) of the country where the doctoral thesis is defended.

At the time of the defense, the chair of the jury will complete an additional document, provided by the awarding institution, which must indicate whether all the conditions for the award of this label have been met.

This system is distinct from that of joint supervision, with which it may overlap.
